Remove creamy layer confusion: Karunanidhi
Saturday, April 19, 2008 18:20 [IST]
Chennai: Observing that the word "creamy layer" to exclude economically well-off OBCs from reservation benefit was "confusing", Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M Karunanidhi today said such a concept was not needed at all and should be removed.

Elaborating the DMK's stand following the high-level meeting of the party held here yesterday, Karunanidhi wrote in the party mouthpiece Murasoli that DMK stands for removal of creamy layer concept for OBC reservation.

He said the apex court verdict had stated that the government could make a relaxation to some extent in the income limit prescribed so that sufficient number of candidates could be made available for filling the 27 per cent quota fully.

But the benefit derived from this would amount to concession, he said adding his party demanded reservation for OBCs as a matter of right and not as concession.

Reservation should be given to OBCs through a law and not by concession, he said.
