Woman cries rape for son’s sake
Saturday, April 19, 2008 20:00 [IST]

Mumbai: Desperate to get her 20-year-old son out of jail, Sadia Wajid Shaikh, 38, accused a police officer of raping her. However, her plot to frame the officer failed after a medical test at JJ Hospital.

According to the police, when Sadia, a resident of Dockyard Road, learnt that her son Shahid had been arrested by the Sakinaka police, she rushed to the police station to get her son released. Shahid, who is a record sheet criminal, is an accused in several housebreaking and robbery cases.

However, when her attempts to get Shahid release failed, Sadia started abusing the on-duty police officers. On seeing that the situation was getting out of control, senior inspector Yashvant Vatkar ordered his subordinates to call two witnesses and video record the drama.

Sadia was charged under 110 and 112 (indecency and misbehaviour with intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Bombay Police Act. She was sent to Rajawadi Hospital on Monday for a medical checkup and was later kept in the custody of the Ghatkopar police.

The next day Sadia was released on bail after her relative paid a fine of Rs1,200. “After being released, Sadia went straight to JJ Hospital and got admitted. She lodged a complaint alleging that she was raped at the police station by detection officer VB Ghorpade,” said Vatkar.

One of eyewitness, Mehrunnisa Rehman, who was present at the police station when the video recording was made said, “The woman had threatened the policeman with dire consequences. She refused to be taken to hospital and even beat two women constables at Saki Naka police station.”

Deputy commissioner of police (zone X) KMM Prasanna said, “The allegations made by Sadia against police sub inspector VB Ghorpade are baseless. According to her allegations she was raped between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. However, according to the log book at the police station, Ghorpade was at BKC police station for a seminar.” Sadia has been sent for further medical examination. Action will be taken once the report is out, Prasanna added.
