Dara Singh has been synonymous with Lord Hanuman for quite some time as he successfully portrayed the character of the Lord, who is an example of sacrifice, tapasya (meditation) and dedication to his master. Gurudatt Tiwari of Bhaskar.com speaks to the legendary actor on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.
Relevance of Hanuman Jayanti today
As I understand, its relevance has been only growing with each day. People have discussed about the same earlier as well. However, due to media hype, it has reached every household. This has resulted in more awareness about the Lord’s sacrifices and devotion.
Effect of mythological films on the society
Such films have awakened religious feelings in people. Earlier, a number of mythological films were produced; that was my era. I have portrayed the characters of Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman and Bheem. After some time, such films were no more made. I feel happy now when I hear that there are many animated films being made on Gods.
How did you infuse life in the character of Hanuman?
I had played the role of Bajrang Bali even before Ramanand Sagar made the TV serial, Ramayana. I had done this role in 1974. Hence, it was not difficult.
Playing Gods
In the era of mythological films, I was considered perfect for the roles of Hanuman as well as Bheem. Once it so happened that I was offered a role of Bheem in 1964 by filmmaker Chandrakant for his movie Veer Bheemsen and simultaneously in 1965 by A A Nadiadwala for Mahabharat.
I told Nadiadwala that I have already signed Chandrakant’s film for the same role. He replied, “Chandrakant is a small filmmaker. His film is black & white. Ours is a colour film”.
I told Nadiadwala’s reaction to Chandrakant and he said, “You surely should do his film. However, how much does he know of Bheem?”
Eventually, I did both the films. And, as Chandrakant had rightly predicted, although his film was black & white, Veer Bheemsen emerged the winner.
Gyms overtaking Akhaadas
It’s true that gyms are taking the place of akhaadas in urban India. However, even now there are lots of akhaadas in rural India where kushtis are arranged; I am invited there very often. The emphasis in akhaadas is on physical strength, while gyms focus more on physical appearance, looks and beauty. It’s sad that people approaching akhaadas are poor. The main reason behind this is the lax attitude of the government in promoting and marketing this age-old physical training centres.
I would like to give a message to the youth of today. They should spend time in akhaadas for good health.
People aren’t spiritual anymore. Comment.
I do not agree to this. Although, today’s youth may not conform to elaborate rituals and procedures of praying, they have sufficient spiritual ideas within.
Ghosts are scared of Hanuman Chaalisa
It is all about belief. I have always believed in Lord Hanuman. It’s because of his blessings that I have hardly lost in any of kushti (wrestling bout), and not a single one internationally.
