Monday, April 21, 2008 08:06 [IST]
Mogadishu: Sixteen people, half of them civilians, were killed in intense fighting in the streets of Mogadishu, bringing the toll for two days of violence to 44, witnesses and officials said.

According to witnesses as well as officials from the government security forces and the Islamist insurgency, at least eight civilians, five Somali soldiers and three insurgents were killed in the latest clashes.

Another 10 people were killed, while the fighting -- the worst to rock the Somali capital in two months -- had already left 18 dead and dozens of wounded yesterday.
