Monday, April 21, 2008 10:05 [IST]

New York: New Jersey will soon have a grand Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna that is coming up at a cost of $10 million.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new temple was held over the weekend, attended by over 3,000 people including religious leaders from India and local dignitaries. Congregants with Indian roots have donated the money for the Sri Guruvayoorappan Temple in Morganville.

Those who attended the ceremony included religious leaders from the Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka and the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam in Andhra Pradesh, two of India's most esteemed religious establishments.

When completed, the temple will span over 33,000 sq ft, consist of two floors, and have main idols for Guruvayoorappan (Krishna), Shiva, Ayyapan, Balaji (Vishnu), and Satyanarayan.

The existing temple at the site is 10 years old and has become a major religious centre for Hindus living in the area as well as for those throughout the tri-state area.
