Monday, April 21, 2008 12:17 [IST]

Jammu: In yet another incident of fratricide, a CRPF jawan deployed near the Vaishno Devi shrine shot and critically injured his company commander and a jawan before committing suicide in Reasi district today.

Veerander Singh had a verbal duel with company commander Inspector Snoop following which he opened fire at him and another jawan identified as Parveen Kumar near the cave shrine, leaving both of them in a critical condition, DIG (Reasi Udhampur Range) Alok Puri told PTI.

The jawan later committed suicide by shooting himself with the self loading rifle, he added.

Singh was deployed on the route leading to Bhairon Ghati area near the holy shrine.

"CRPF has ordered a probe into the incident," Puri said Nearly 600 CRPF personnel are deployed on the 13 km route from Katra to the shrine.

As many as 19 army and CRPF jawans have committed suicide in the past six months in Jammu and Kashmir.
