New Delhi: The opposition and Left parties Monday said the internal security situation in the country was deteriorating and accused the government of doing little to check the trend.

During a debate on demands for grants for the home ministry in the Lok Sabha, Yogi Adityanath, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Gorakhpur, led the attack on the government.

"The home minister (Shivraj Patil) agreed in parliament that the Naxal (Maoist) problem has increased. But when the Maoists won the elections in Nepal, the Indian government welcomed it. If this is supported, then we cannot solve the problem here," he said.

"When the Maoists started gaining strength in Nepal, Indian Maoists also got emboldened and carried out many terror operations in India," Adityanath said.

Stating that the internal security situation in the country had continuously deteriorated, he said: "Whether it is Kashmir, the northeast or the southern states, the situation has worsened."

He blamed the "soft" policies of the government for this state of affairs.

Lack of coordination between local intelligence, central intelligence agencies and military intelligence was one of the main reasons for this, he said.

"Earlier, we blamed Pakistan for terrorist activities. Now even Bangladesh is indulging in it. Bhutan was pressurised by the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) and it dismantled terror camps," he said.

Ramjilal Suman of the Samajwadi Party said there were 146 terrorist training camps in Bangladesh today. "The terrorists are now also involved in the share market," he said.

Mohammad Salim of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said: "We spend 3.97 percent of the budget on security, which is more than what is spent on education. However, if we want to control the internal security situation, than the non-strategic issues should also be given importance."

He said increasing unemployment was forcing many young men to join hands with terrorists.

Devendra Prasad of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) regretted that in Assam, retired Judge J.N. Saikia in a report thanked the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) for not disrupting the elections there.
