Kathmandu: Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's Nepali Congress today said it will not compromise on the issue of democracy while drafting the new constitution of the Himalayan nation.
"The principle of restricting individual freedom in the name of equality cannot be accepted by the modern world governed by the ideals of democracy and liberalism," NC vice- president Ramchandra Poudyal said in an apparent reference to the Maoists, who emerged as the single largest party in the Constituent Assembly election held earlier this month.
"The ideals which have failed worldwide cannot be imposed in Nepal for another test," Poudyal, also the Minister for Peace and Reconstruction, said at an interactive event here.
Paoudyal asked the former rebel Maoists, who returned to the political mainstream after signing a peace deal last year, to end all types of "parallel authorities" including parallel army barracks and courts to move the peace process forward.
Maoist deputy commander and newly-elected CA member Barshaman Pun "Ananta" said the responsibility of drafting the new constitution has come to the Seven Party Alliance and the peace process will come to a logical end only after rewriting the constitution through the Constituent Assembly.
"We want to end the feudal system, monarchy and all kinds of exploitation," he said adding, the Maoists are committed to eliminate racial, sexual, regional and class discrimination.
"At the moment we are in favour of a capitalistic revolution as socialism is a faraway dream," he said.
