UPA likely to feel Left heat over inflation
Friday, April 25, 2008 09:59 [IST]

New Delhi: After opposition NDA, it will be the Left allies that would be stepping up pressure on the Congress-led Government on the issue of price rise.

Left leaders led by CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday seeking urgent measures to rein in spiralling inflation.

"We want the Government to take immediate steps to check price rise," Karat said.

The CPI(M) has been critical on the Government for not banning futures and forward trading in essential commodities and has held speculation the prime cause of price rise.

The leaders will demand a ban on both futures and forward trading in essential commodities and are likely to raise the issue of "neglect" of public distribution system (PDS).

They may also demand restoration of the central quota of foodgrain allocation to states like Kerala and West Bengal.

Left parties, who are continuing their agitation with the UNPA on the issue of price rise, would meet soon to decide on their next course of action.
