$3 mn gurdwara inaugurated in US
Friday, April 25, 2008 16:38 [IST]

New York: Sikhs in Reno in Nevada have started work to build a $3 million gurdwara by carrying the holy Guru Granth Sahib in a procession from the old temple building.

Inaugural ceremonies that started with a three-day "akhand path" - non-stop recital of the Sikh scripture - will conclude on Saturday. The two-storey gurdwara spread over 2.4 acres is topped with a golden dome on the pattern of traditional Sikh temple architecture.

Besides the large main hall, the gurdwara also has a hall for community events and a kitchen to prepare langar (community lunch). It will have three large plasma screens showing transcripts in English and Punjabi languages of the priest's readings from the holy scripture.

According to Amolak Singh Powar, president of the Reno Sikh Temple, the gurdwara will add more facilities for teaching Punjabi language and religious lessons, a press statement said.
