Compensation for insurgency-hit people in Nepal
Saturday, April 26, 2008 13:44 [IST]
Kathmandu: Nepal government has decided to provide $1560 (Nepali Rs 100,000) as relief to families of each of those killed during the decade-long insurgency.

A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala yesterday decided to distribute the relief money to families of some 13,246 people who were either killed by the Maoists or the security personnel, officials here said.

An additional $390 (Nepali Rs 25,000) would be provided to widows of those slain in attacks during the 10-year period, they said.

The government also decided to provide scholarship to up to three children of each person killed. Compensation will also be provided to those whose property was damaged during the war.

The decision was taken as part of the 23-point agreement signed by the ruling seven-party alliance last year.
