Jamshedpur: A police constable died of sunstroke here as heat wave swept across the steel city and its surrounding areas in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand over the past few days.
Forty-year-old constable, Virendra Pandy, felt uneasy after he returned home from duty yesterday. He was rushed to MGM hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead, police said.
The exact cause behind the death could be known only after the post mortem, but he was suspected to have died of heatstroke, hospital sources said.
While the maximum temperature recorded here yesterday was 42.6 degree Celsius, the city experienced the hottest day of the season at 42.9 degree Celsius on Thursday, met office sources said.
Several schools here, like other places in the state, have curtailed school hours to prevent children from getting affected. While Bokaro recorded 45 degrees Celsius, Ranchi was at 39 degrees Celsius yesterday.
Temperatures in most of the other towns were recorded at around 40 degrees Celsius. Source : PTI
