Four killed in fire in Varanasi

Varanasi: Four persons, including three women, were burnt alive while several others sustained serious injury in a fire at Devara Khas Raj village under Raunapur police station in Azamgarh district, police said.

Over forty huts were gutted in the incident on Thursday afternoon. A spark from a wheat threshing machine ignited the fire in a hut and it soon spread to neighbouring dwellings.

The victims were identified as Matia Devi (30), Gomti Devi (58), Patiraj (56) and Shobha Devi.

Police and administrative officials rushed to the spot. A compensation of Rs 3 lakh has been announced for the families of the victims.

Each of the families affected by the fire will receive a compensation of Rs 3000.
