BJP protests against cheerleaders in Kolkata
Saturday, April 26, 2008 16:36 [IST]

Kolkata: More than hundred BJP supporters today held a demonstration outside Eden Garden here to protest against the scantily-clad cheergirls performing at the IPL cricket matches.

Demanding an immediate ban on cheerleaders, the supporters shouted slogans against BCCI president Sharad Pawar and the West Bengal Government. They also burnt an effigy of BCCI chief and threatened to hold a bigger demonstration on April 29 when the Kolkata Knight Riders will be playing here again.

BJP state general secretary Rahul Sinha said it was more deplorable as Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee was allowing such activities on the field. "Our chief minister is known for his cultural leanings, but he has said nothing in this regard," Sinha said. "Why do we have to use scantily-clad women brought from Europe and America? If we have to have entertainment, we can always have Indian dances by local artistes," he said.

"Our culture is very rich and such improper activities should be banned immediately," the BJP leader said. Sinha said the BJP Mahila Morcha members would hold protests outside the Eden Gardens on April 29 if the cheerleaders were not banned from performing at the stadium.
