Don't call me Yuvraj please: Rahul Gandhi
Saturday, April 26, 2008 17:21 [IST]

rahul_gandhiChaturvedi Kanker (Chhattisgarh): Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said he found the word 'yuvraj' (prince) insulting and that it had no place in Indian democracy.

"I find the word 'yuvraj' insulting because India is a democracy. The word (yuvaraj) has no meaning here," said Gandhi at a press conference here. "(Prime Minister) Manmohan Singh is a very capable leader. And I support my leader," he added.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi, at a press conference, earlier had described Gandhi as a yuvraj of the people, leading to criticism from the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) MPs in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Gandhi is on a four-day tour of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh as part of a series of visits to some poor and tribal areas of the country.
