1984 riot victims demand payment of compensation
Saturday, April 26, 2008 22:48 [IST]
Jalandhar: Accusing the Punjab government of adopting dilly-dallying attitude in distribution of compensation to 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims, Riot Victims Welfare Society today demanded immediate disbursement of the relief to the affected families.

"Although the state government got the fund of Rs 440 crore from the Centre in 2006 and the Prime Minister himself announced that compensation of Rs two lakh will be distributed to each riot affected family, the state government has not distributed the same to all affected families," president of the Society Surjit Singh told reporters here.

He alleged that even bureaucracy was creating hurdle in making the mandatory red cards for the victims to get the announced compensation.
"A 21-member delegation will meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the coming week and remind him the promise his party made in the poll manifesto regarding immediate payment of compensation to the riot victims," he said.
