Thursday, May 01, 2008 06:06 [IST]

Tokyo: A moderate 4.5 earthquake shook eastern Japan today, but there was no threat of a tsunami, the Meteorological Agency said.

The tremor, which occurred at 7:34 am (local time), jolted areas in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo, the agency said.

The epicentre was located off the coast of Chiba, at a depth of 40 kilometres below sea level in the Pacific.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Japan experiences 20 per cent of the world's major earthquakes.
