New offer to Iran over nuke issue agreed: Britain
Saturday, May 03, 2008 15:59 [IST]

London: The five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany have agreed on a "new offer" to be made to Iran in connection with the international tension over the country's nuclear ambitions.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, speaking at the end of a meeting of foreign ministers from the six states in London, said details of the offer would not be made public "except to the government of Iran".

The offer was an "update" on a similar move made by the group in June 2006, and outline the "benefits" for Iran of entering into a dialogue over its nuclear programme.

Miliband said participants were agreed that Iran's ambitions posed a "grave problem" and were a "very serious threat" to international stability. The meeting was hosted by Britain and attended by US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, as well as the foreign ministers of France, Russia and Germany and the vice foreign minister of China.
