Blairs buy 4 mn pound stately home
Monday, May 05, 2008 08:39 [IST]

London: Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie Blair have bought a four million pounds stately home that belonged to the late actor Sir John Gielgud in Buckinghamshire.

Their acquisition of the Grade 1 listed mansion brings the number of homes the Blairs now own to six - two in London, a pair of flats in Bristol and Blair's former constituency home in Durham.

The property has been sold without being offered to the general public, its estate agency in Henley-on-Thames has said.

Its current owner is Effie Lecky, widow of Canadian discount airline boss John Lecky, who has lived there for less than two years.

A spokesman for the Blairs, however, has refused to comment.

The house, built in 1704, has at least seven bedrooms, a 52ft long double-height drawing room, as well as stunning gardens, two paddocks and a four-bedroom outbuilding conversation. Bought for 3.5 million pounds in 2004, the listed Georgian townhouse has been described as a mini-Downing Street.
