Salem: Thrown into a 60-foot deep well allegedly by her parents, a five-day-old baby girl had a miraculous escape after she got entangled in some thorny bushes inside.
Police said the incident occurred at Kondalampatti village yesterday.
Local people who heard the child's cries, alerted fire service personnel, who rushed to the spot and rescued the baby.
The well had water upto 40 feet and was not being used by locals.
The baby, with bruises all over it s body, was admitted to the government Mohan Kumaramangalam hospital and later put in the cradle baby centre there, they said.
Salem district, which has gained an unsavoury reputation over the years for persistent cases of female infanticide, has witnessed a sudden spurt of incidents of new born babies being abandoned by their parents in the last three months.
At least 10 babies were found abandoned in recent months. Of these four have survived.
