Monday, May 05, 2008 17:09 [IST]

Islamabad: Taliban has asked tribesmen in Pakistan's northwestern region to grow beards within two months or else face punishment under the Islamic laws, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported Monday.

Senior Taliban leaders have passed the order during a meeting of tribesmen at a mosque in Bajaur tribal agency, the report said.

The Taliban said anyone who disobeys their instructions would be punished in accordance with the Islamic laws.

Earlier, militant group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had advised people not to shave beards. It also had set a deadline to follow the orders.

The barbers in Bajaur and other tribal regions were also advised by the Taliban not to shave beards of people.

Some of the barbers have displayed the written orders at their shops.
