US to change policy on Maoists

Kathmandu: The United States is planning to change its policy towards Nepal, a US official has said.

The US government is doing homework to remove the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist from the terrorist list and Nepal from the negative travel advisory, said Political and Economic Chief of the US embassy in Nepal Williams S. Martin.

Martin made this revelation at a meeting Monday with Nepal Chamber of Commerce (N. C. C.) Chairman Surendra Bir Malakar and Chamber's Honorary Representative for US, Pralhad K. C.

Acknowledging the CPN-M as the largest party of Nepal, Martin said the US government was curiously waiting on the issue of the formation of new government.

He said, the US government will appreciate the mandate given by the Nepali people and the CPN-M will change their behaviour in the days ahead.

On extending tenure of United Nations Mission In Nepal beyond July 22,Martin said, it will be decided by the government of Nepal.

However, he said, the US thinks the need of additional positive role of UNMIN in Nepal.

Chamber President Malakar lauded the role played by the US in Nepal's development and expected continued cooperation to the new government to be headed by the CPN-M.

Honorary Representative of the chamber for US, Prahlad K. C. Said Nepalese in America have been taking initiative in removing the country from the negative travel advisory and helping in holding fairs and exhibitions of Nepalese export items and making arrangement for trade delegations.
