Jammu: Police today arrested a doctor on charges of gross negligence after a woman patient died at the Ramban district hospital near here.
Dr Pradeep Kumar was arrested after he was suspended by the Jammu and Kashmir government holding him responsible for the death 25-year-old Mathi Devi at the hospital yesterday, official sources said.
Earlier, about 300 people blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Ramban following the death of the woman demanding appropriate action against the doctor. They marched to the deputy commissioner's office and demanded an inquiry on the conduct of Kumar.
The protesters also reportedly raised slogans against health and medical education minister Mangat Ram Sharma and the district's chief medical officer.
On April 28, Mathi Devi of Ganot village was admitted to the hospital after she complained of stomach pain. Kumar operated on Mathi Devi and allegedly took Rs 10,000 from her relatives. She later developed complications and was referred to the Government Medical College for specialised treatment. Source : PTI
