Putin confirmed as Russia's prime minister

Moscow: Russian Parliament today confirmed Vladimir Putin as Prime Minister, a day after he handed over the presidency to his hand-picked successor Dmitry Medvedev.

The lower house of Parliament voted 392 to 56 in favour of Putin's candidacy. Medvedev nominated 55-year-old Putin after he was sworn in as President yesterday.

Putin's confirmation in the Parliament was certain as his United Russia party holds more than two-thirds of the Duma's seats. United Russia party hold 315 seats in the 450-member strong Duma.
