Thursday, May 08, 2008 22:26 [IST]

New Delhi: A young woman, who could not conceive, was allegedly strangled in the capital by her husband so that he could marry again and have children.

Kavita (27) was strangled allegedly by her husband Sanjeev (34) yesterday afternoon at their residence in Anand Vihar in east Delhi, a senior police official said.

Sanjeev, after allegedly committing the crime, telephoned his wife's parents and claimed that she had jumped to death as she was depressed for being unable to conceive.

The couple were married for seven years and Sanjeev earns a living by repairing cycles.

Police claimed Sanjeev's role in the murder came to light after medical examination revealed that she did not die of any external injury but due to strangulation.

Police interrogated Sanjeev, during which he broke down and confessed to the crime, the official said, adding he told investigators that he wanted to marry again and have children.

A case of murder has been registered.
