No tie-up with Congress in panchayat polls: Mamata
Thursday, May 08, 2008 23:48 [IST]

Nandigram (WB): Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said her party would have no tie-up with the Congress in the panchayat polls as the Congress led UPA government at the Centre is "totally silent" on the CPI(M) led atrocities in Nandigram.

"The Centre is totally mum on the CPI(M) atrocities in Nandigram. The Centre has not uttered a single word on the Nandigram violence," she told a public meeting at Nandakumar, near Nandigram.

"The CPI(M) got the courage to commit atrocities in Nandigram because it knows that the Congress led UPA government at the Centre would not take any action against it," she alleged.

She called upon the people to teach the CPI(M) a lesson by voting against them in the panchayat polls.

After addressing the public rally, the Trinamool chief sat on a dharna in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) alleging that the police have failed to take any action against CPI(M) activists committing atrocities in Nandigram.

The TC chief said she would lift the dharna only after she gets an assurance from the SP that police would provide security to people driven out of their homes by the CPI(M) activists.

She demanded that the SP visit Nandigram immediately and action be taken against CPI(M) activists for the violence in Nandigram.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement in the East Midnapore district headquarters town of Tamluk was hit due to the dharna by Mamata Banerjee.
