Paramilitary soldier killed in NW Pakistan clash
Friday, May 09, 2008 00:03 [IST]

Islamabad: A paramilitary soldier was killed and another injured while repulsing an attack by militants on a police station in the troubled Swat valley in northwestern Pakistan today.

The militants attacked the police station at Kabal town in Swat with rockets at about 2 am. This sparked a shootout between security forces and militants that continued for an hour. The militants escaped from the site when the police personnel effectively countered the attack, officials said.

The militants attacked the police station from three directions. The boundary wall of the police station was slightly damaged.

A military spokesman said a personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps was killed in the firing while another sustained minor wounds.

In a separate incident in the same area, the son of a local government official was kidnapped from Landi Kas. Police have launched a search to trace the kidnapped man.
