PM has "failed" on all fronts: Buddha
Friday, May 09, 2008 23:24 [IST]

Kolkata/New Delhi: Keeping up his attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee today alleged he has "failed on all fronts", drawing rebuttal from the Prime Minister's Office which said the charge lacked legitimacy.

"I repeat what I have said. I did not try to denigrate the Prime Minister. I have high respect for him. Unfortunately, he is heading a government which is failing to perform on all fronts," Bhattacharjee told reporters here.

"He could not control the inflation and the price rise of essential commodities," Bhattacharjee said.

The Chief Minister said Congress has lost a series of elections under the leadership of the Prime Minister and this was an "alarming situation".

Asked whether CPI(M) would again support Congress to form the government if Left and allies failed to get majority to keep BJP away, Bhattacherjee said "it is too early to say. After the parliamentary elections, the party will meet and decide."

"We are supporting the Manmohan Singh government on certain conditions. On the economic front, the government is failing, but Congress is a secular party," he said.

Bhattacharjee said our goal is to build up a third" alternative at the Centre minus Congress and BJP and we are trying for it."

The Prime Minister's Office(PMO) rejected Bhattacharjee's criticism that Manmohan Singh has "failed" to perform on the "economic" front saying it was unfounded and lacked legitimacy.

Asserting that in the "daily din of politics" politicians often make such statements, PM s Media Adviser Sanjaya Baru said the "record of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and it is there for everyone to see."
