United Nations: The United Nations today sought 187 million dollars from international donors to provide immediate relief to more than one and a half million victims of the deadly cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.
The consolidated appeal was launched on behalf of ten UN organisations and nine NGOs and the world body said it would be updated regularly to new needs as the situation evolves.
The United Nations said the planning horizon of the appeal is six months. But current difficulties surrounding access to the affected areas and problems in bringing in further relief supplies are causing a "shadow" over planning.
Referring to the Mynmar government's indication that it is open to international assistance, the UN said it appears that the assistance envisaged is primarily bilateral with help going directly to government relief agencies.
The government itself has promised USD five million for relief work.
The UN appeal for help comes as Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the agency is preparing to send two planeloads of food and relief items to Myanmar.
Ban said he "regrettably" has yet to have direct talks with the military junta in Myanmar despite his efforts.
During a visit to Atlanta, he appealed to the country's leaders "to do all they can to facilitate this aid."
"We must put aside all political differences," Ban said.
