20 dead, many missing as ferry capsizes in Haiti
Monday, May 12, 2008 09:00 [IST]
Port-au-Prince: A ferry capsized north of the capital Port-au-Prince off the coast of Haiti, killing some 20 people and leaving dozens more missing, Haitian authorities said today.

"Haitian police and peacekeepers from the UN mission in Haiti have recovered the bodies of some 20 victims. The search continues," police inspector general Fritz Jean said.

More than 100 people were aboard the vessel on the route between the capital and Pestel, in the country's southwest, police said.

"At the moment no survivors have been rescued," said member of parliament Accluche Louis-Jeune.

The legislator said as many as 200 people were aboard the ferry when it sank at about 0930 IST today, a few kilometres from Port-au-Prince.
