Home ministry seeks report on Nandigram violence
Monday, May 12, 2008 17:12 [IST]

New Delhi: The home ministry Monday sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government on the first phase of panchayat polls that has seen political clashes in recent days, especially in Nandigram.

Paramilitary and police forces reportedly clashed with the cadres of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

On the basis of the report, the ministry is likely to hold a high-level meeting with senior officials to take stock of the situation, said officials.

The first phase of panchayat polls in five districts of the state was marred by a confrontation between CPI-M MP Lakshman Seth and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deputy inspector general Alok Raj, who faced charges of molestation in Nandigram.

Alok Raj, however, denied the charge.

A large contingent of paramilitary forces, including CRPF and BSF, was deployed in the areas where the polling took place on Sunday.

The three-phase panchayat elections are being held May 11, 14 and 18. Counting will take place May 21.
