Eight killed in factory blast near Nagpur
Monday, May 12, 2008 19:24 [IST]

Nagpur: Eight people, including a woman, were killed and 15 others injured in an accidental detonator explosion in a stone crusher at Umred near here on Monday, the police said.

The blast occurred at noon when the workers of SMS Thresher Co were off-loading and checking detonators from a supply truck that just arrived with the goods, the police said.

“A woman living in a hut in the factory premises was cooking food on a hearth when the detonators were being off-loaded. The blast was triggered apparently by some sparks from the hearth,” sub-divisional police officer Ramesh Ghodam told IANS.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Yashasvi Yadav and additional SP Sandip Karnik visited the site in the afternoon and a bomb detection and disposal squad was rushed in the evening, Ghodam said.

The injured have been admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Nagpur, he added.
