CPI submits petition against inflation
Monday, May 12, 2008 19:57 [IST]

New Delhi: Mounting pressure on the government over rising prices, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday submitted a 'petition' to parliament and warned the UPA government of "serious consequences" if it did not contain inflation.

"The government, which is good for nothing, should be changed," CPI parliamentarian Gurudas Dasgupta said after submitting the memorandum to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

The memorandum, dubbed as a 'petition to parliament', has 10 points on the steps that the government should take to control the prices of essential commodities.

The petition carries 10 million signatures, according to CPI leaders, and seeks to draw the Lok Sabha's attention to "violation of labour laws, weakening of the public distribution system besides seeking steps to check hoarding".

The Left parties, which support the Congress-led government from outside, have been demanding that the government strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and ban futures trading in essential commodities to control spiralling price rise.

The Left leaders will meet May 23 to discuss what they termed as the failure of the government to contain inflation.
