Tuesday, May 13, 2008 02:46 [IST]

KATHMANDU: Putting forth preconditions for supporting the CPN-Maoist-led government, Nepali Congress on Monday asked the former rebels to dissolve their military and para-military organisations and return looted property.

The central committee meeting of Nepali Congress, chaired by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, on Monday asked the Maoists to dissolve their People's Liberation Army, semi-combatant Young Communist League and either destroy or return the weapons stored in cantonment before the party could extend support to the Maoist-led government, Nepali Congress publicity in-charge Prakash Mahat said.

The Nepali Congress also asked the Maoists to halt their acts of extortion and intimidation against other political cadres.

The meeting held at Koirala's residence at Baluwatar also asked the Maoists to return the land and property they had looted in the past, rehabilitate the combatants in the society on the basis of political consensus, he said.

Mahat said the party would decide whether to support formation of the next government after Maoists fulfill all commitments reached during the peace process.

"Even after the elections, the Maoists' atrocities have not stopped," he alleged.

The Nepali Congress also decided to expedite drafting of constitution and declaration of the Himalayan country as a republic on the basis of cooperation and consensus among all the political parties, Mahat said.

Besides area of cooperation with other political parties would be widened to take the peace process to the logical end, he said.
