New Delhi: In yet another incident of law keepers turning law-breakers in Delhi, a constable along with three people from his family was booked in a murder case in village Rabupura near Noida, on the outskirts of the national capital.
One person was killed and three others injured in the incident.
Delhi police constable Harish Chander allegedly opened fire on 18-year-old Sonu late on Sunday. Chander’s father Banne Singh, mother Uma and brother Sunil have been named as the co-accused in the case and been booked under section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.
However, all the accused are absconding and Noida police said efforts were on to nab the culprits.
The accused belonged to the nearby Rustampur village and police said search teams had been sent to the village.
The police said that the motive of the crime was not yet known but were not ruling out the possibility of a monetary or property dispute in the matter.
This is the third such instance in the past 15 days in which a cop has been booked in a criminal case.
Last week, a woman in east Delhi had accused a policeman of molesting her and beating her up, while on April 25 a traffic constable was accused of and later suspended for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl in a moving car.
In fact, a look at the most recent report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals that on an average, 10 complaints are lodged against every 100 policemen in the national capital.
As per the NCRB 2006 report, Delhi was third after Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in terms of percentage of complaints against policemen.
A senior official of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), said violent crimes such as physical abuse, rape and murder by policemen were “fuelled by the lust for boosting their ego” and due to a lack of sensitivity, supervision and job satisfaction.
The official said, “Violation of human rights by policemen must be thoroughly investigated and stern punishments should be meted out to them if they are found guilty. Policemen are never taught how to behave with a criminal or a victim. They weigh everyone equally”.
For a city known for its skyrocketing crime rate, the fact that even police officials are responsible for the escalating crime graph is a grave cause of concern.
