US says ambassadors harassed in Zimbabwe
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 03:00 [IST]

Washington: The United States says Zimbabwe has harassed the US ambassador and other diplomats in the country.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says the treatment is indicative of an atmosphere that makes life difficult for citizens who speak out.

Zimbabwean police today confronted foreign diplomats seeking to investigate allegations of torture. One officer threatened to hit the US ambassador with his car.

Tensions have been escalating in Zimbabwe since March 29 presidential elections.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai claims he won the presidential race outright. But official results released weeks after the poll showed he did not win enough votes to avoid a second round against President Robert Mugabe.
