Moderate quake rocks Taiwan

Taipei: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale rocked southern Taiwan today, the central weather bureau said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The tremor struck at 2:27 am (2357 IST Tuesday) and was centred 12.1 kilometres southwest of Taitung city at a depth of 10 kilometres, the bureau said.

Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes.
