China quake: Death toll in single city hits 3,000
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 09:17 [IST]

MIianzhu (China): The powerful earthquake that struck China's Sichuan province has killed 3,000 people in the city of Mianzhu alone, state media reported, significantly raising earlier figures.

The local disaster relief headquarters said rescuers had been able to pull 500 people alive out of the debris of collapsed buildings.

More than 10,000 people were injured in Monday's quake and 20,000 in three outer villages were still out of reach, it added, cited by Xinhua.

Earlier, officials had put the death toll in Mianzhu at 2,000 but with thousands more buried under rubble.

At least 500 people have been confirmed dead in Wenchuan county, the area at the epicentre of the massive quake that struck southwestern China.
