Lahore: The split within Pakistan’s ruling coalition, caused with the Sharif-led PML cabinet minister’s resignations recently over PPP leader Asif Zardari’s reluctance to reinstate the deposed judges, has infused an element of confidence in the once-beleaguered presidency, which seems to be the only significant beneficiary of the cracks in the ruling coalition.
Although Sharif’s party’s public standing has gone up substantially because of its leaving the federal cabinet on a principled issue, the same has strengthened President Pervez Musharraf, who was earlier feeling down and almost out of the equation in the wake of the general elections results.
The presidential camp has accelerated its efforts to enure that Asif Zardari agrees to join hands with the Musharraf-backed PML-Q. The PML-Q is brimming with joy over the split of the PML-N with the PPP. Its prophetic assertion after being fed by its boss, Musharraf, that the judges would not be restored has so far proven true.
Musharraf seems to have regained his confidence and has resolved to be there in the presidency and complete his five year-constitutional tenure.
