Friday, May 16, 2008 11:03 [IST]
Jammu: Troops have recovered a "consignment" of 60 kilograms of heroin and fake Indian currency with face value of Rs 16 lakhs near the Indo-Pak border, a senior army official said here today. However, no arrest has been made.

The contraband worth Rs 300 crore in the international market and the fake currency notes were seized near the international border in R S Pura border belt of Jammu district yesterday, J B Sangwan, Additional DIG, BSF said.

Acting upon specific information about drugs smuggling, Border Security Force jawans laid an ambush near Durga Tower border outpost of the area in the wee hours last morning, he said.

Armed with night vision devices, troops observed some persons moving around 0230 hours and challenged them, the official said. However, the suspected persons fled back towards Pakistan leaving behind a "consignment", Sangwan added.

During a search in the morning, the BSF jawans recovered 60 packets of heroin wrapped in a bag, five packets of 1000 rupees denomination notes and 22 packets of Rs 500 denomination notes from the spot, he said.

The latest recovery of narcotics is considered as the biggest haul along the international border by the BSF this year. It is also the fifth such incident reported in Jammu near the border this year.

The recovery also comes a day after security forces seized Rs 1.5 lakh from a PoK citizen allegedly meant for militant outfits operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
