Rourkela civic staff goes on strike

Rourkela: The indefinite sit-in-dharna and hunger strike launched by employees of Rourkela Municipality in front of the municipal office here in support of their eight point charter of demands entered the second day today.

About 1050 employees of the municipality and Notified Area Council (NAC), Rourkela under the banner of Rourkela Municipality Employees Union continuing their agitation which has been supported by former chairmen of the municipality, Narendra Tripathy and Kalandi Badajena, vice-chairman Sanjukta Das and many councillors.

A temporary employee of the municipality, Binayak Khadanga demanding regularisation of temporary employees, has launched indefinite hunger strike since yesterday.

The Congress led municipal council under the chairmanhip of Ramesh Bal had been facing problem as several councillors openly supported the demands of the employees alleging that many decisions taken in the council meetings had not been implemented.

The main demands of the employees are - regularisation of temporary employees who had been completed more than 10 years in service, promotion of existing employees, free medical facilities and provision of uniforms.
