British tourists repose faith in Jaipur
Saturday, May 17, 2008 06:08 [IST]

London: British tourists continue to repose faith in the holiday destination of Jaipur despite the recent terror attack that claimed over 60 lives.

Tour operators in the UK have said that travellers had become increasingly level-headed about the risks posed by terrorists since the July 7 attacks in London in 2005. "People don't really get put off by terrorist attacks," said Frances Tuke, of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

"The turning point was 7/7. People realised that attacks can happen here, that nobody is immune, and that terrorism is now a global problem. So people are not prepared to cancel holidays. They are much more robust." A spokeswoman of ABTA told PTI, there was no evidence of any major cancellations for Goa as well due to the adverse publicity the state had due to the Scarlett Keeling case.

The travel agents are monitoring the latest travel advice by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice but they did not expect India to be put on a tourist "blacklist" since the Jaipur attacks were not specifically aimed at foreigners. About 750,000 Britons visit India on holiday each year, with thousands visiting Jaipur, Delhi and Agra. The FCO said that there was a high threat of terrorism throughout India but it had not revised its advisory.
