Saturday, May 17, 2008 21:05 [IST]

Ranchi: Maoist rebels killed a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Lohardagga district of Jharkhand, the police said here on Saturday.

According to the police, the activists of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) abducted Mahadeo Sahu, president of Senah block, and two others on Friday night.

The other two men abducted were released by the Maoists but Sahu was shot dead. After the killing, the CPI-Maoist left pamphlets at the spot alleging that the BJP leader was a police informer.

The BJP supporters blocked the Ranchi-Lohardagga road demanding compensation and the arrest of the killers. The blockade was cleared after the district administration announced a compensation of Rs.10,000 to the family members of the deceased.

Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the 24 districts of the state. In the last seven years more than 1,000 people, including civilians and Maoist rebels have been killed. At least 614 civilians and 290 security personnel have been among the victims.
