'Don't create misunderstanding over serial blasts'
Saturday, May 17, 2008 21:58 [IST]

New Delhi: Amid differences between the central and Rajasthan governments over the role of intelligence ahead of the serial terror blasts that killed 61 in Jaipur, Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Saturday said on statement should be made that could create misunderstanding between the agencies and the governments.

He said that “nothing should be done and said which would create obstacles and misunderstanding and is unhelpful in the task of investigating agencies”.

While he did not make a reference to it, his comments came against the backdrop of the Rajasthan government's repeated criticism that the central government had not provided it the intelligence inputs that could have prevented Tuesday's attacks.

“For this purpose, no statement, which can create misunderstanding between the agencies and governments should be made by those who are involved in doing their duties. Issues which are not pertinent at this point of time need not be raised now,” he added.

"They were raised in the past. They can be raised in the future. At this time, they are better avoided. This is necessary to present a picture, which is helpful for the task to be performed.

“With this objective in mind, everybody is coming forth and trying to be helpful. This should be appreciated by one and all. In fact, the people appear to appreciate it," he added.

Condemning the serial bomb attacks in which over 200 were injured, Patil said they were “perpetrated to disturb the communal harmony” and praised people for not “allowing the design to succeed.”

"The incidents that were perpetrated in Jaipur are most condemnable. They were perpetrated to disturb the communal harmony. Very wisely, the people have behaved in a responsible manner and have not allowed the design to succeed. They deserve our thanks and congratulations,” Patil said.

He said the victims need understanding and sympathy.

“They should be helped in every respect. They are being helped in every respect by the state and the union is also helping the state and the victims,” he said.

“Steps need be taken to take action against the perpetrators of the incidents.

“Those who are on this job should be helped in every respect. The union would help the state and its police to do its duty,” Patil said.
