Jharkhand lawyers' strike affects court work
Saturday, May 17, 2008 22:05 [IST]

Ranchi: Lawyers in Jharkhand observed a one-day strike on Saturday protesting the killing of a lawyer in Palamau district of the state.

The lawyers struck work demanding arrest of the killers of Jawahar Singh, who was murdered when he was returning to his house from court in Daltanganj Tuesday.

The striking lawyers demanded immediate arrest of the criminals involved and a government job to a member of the victim's family as compensation.

"Jharkhand government should ensure security to lawyers of the state. If lawyers are targeted then it will be difficult for anyone to pursue cases," said Subodh Dubey, a lawyer of Jharkhand High Court.

The Ranchi civil court wore a deserted look as the strike was total. The lawyers have threatened an indefinite strike if the law and order situation in the state does not improve.
