Six killed in Iraq clashes
Sunday, May 18, 2008 18:19 [IST]

Baghdad: At least six people were killed and 30 others wounded in clashes between the US-backed Iraqi security forces and Shia militia here Sunday, an official said.

Cashes broke out early Sunday between the two sides in Sadr city neighbourhood of the Iraqi capital. Three mortar rounds struck a house, killing six people and wounding 30, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Several houses were also damaged in the attack. Baghdad's Sadr city is a stronghold of the Mahdi Army militia.

The latest clashes cast doubts over a deal struck last week by representatives of the Iraqi government and Sadr's movement aimed at ending weeks of fighting in Baghdad between the Shia militiamen, loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and US-backed Iraqi security forces.
