Boy accused of stealing, paraded naked in Delhi
Sunday, May 18, 2008 21:28 [IST]

New Delhi: A 14-year-old boy was paraded naked with “I am thief” written on his stomach and back in Dwarka area of the capital for allegedly stealing a dress from a boutique where he worked.

The victim was garlanded with shoes and paraded naked in the Sector 6 market of Dwarka in southwest Delhi late Friday by shopowner Pinky Sarkar, according to a complaint the victim's mother Urmila Shankar filed with the police.

“In a bid to take false revenge, she along with some men shaved my son's head, undressed him and stamped 'I am thief and 420' on his stomach and back. They put garland of shoes around his neck and paraded him before the market,” Shankar alleged in her complaint.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest Delhi) Shalini Singh said she was not aware of the incident. However, an official at the Dwarka police station confirmed the incident.

“Both parties have given us in writing that they have reached a compromise and do not want to proceed with the matter any more,” Inspector Anil Kumar of the Dwarka police station told IANS.

Kumar refused to say why the police did not take any suo motu action against either the boy, who allegedly committed a theft, or the shopowner who violated the boy's human rights and illtreated him.
