Congress bandh affects normal life in Dimapur
Monday, May 19, 2008 11:45 [IST]

Kohima: Normal life came to a grinding halt in the commercial hub of Dimapur today due to a bandh called by the Pradesh Congress to protest against the state government's alleged failure to contain factional violence and arrest skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.

The town wore a deserted look with vehicular traffic and pedestrians remainig off the roads. All shops, business establishments, banks and government offices remained closed.

No untoward incident was reported from the town, district administration officials said.

Seeking the Centre's intervention into the "deteriorating law and order situation," Congress alleged that the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) was a "mute spectator" during the recent factional clashes in and around Dimapur.

At least 40 people, including civilians and students, were killed in the bloody turf war between rival groups of NSCN in the past two months.

Meanwhile, various organisations and churches condemning Friday's killing of 15 people in factional fighting between Naga groups, asked underground factions to vacate residential areas and confine themselves to designated camps as per the ceasefire ground rules.
