Kolkata: Making the best of the Centre's relaxation of LTC rules for employees visiting the Northeast, Assam has decided to aggressively promote the state's hot spots like Kaziranga National Park and Kamakshya among domestic and foreign tourists.
"The government plans to contact various consulates, public sector units, Central government offices, big private companies and tour operators to recommend visiting Assam this summer," Assistant Tourist Information officer Smita Mishra told PTI.
Sites like Kamakshya near Guwahati, Kaziranga National Park and other sites in upper Assam, where insurgent activity has come down, are being promoted.
Armed with relevant data on dwindling militant activity in upper Assam, the officials are talking to people in the consulates of the US, UK and other European Union countries in Kolkata.
State tourism officials are also hoping to cash in on the dwindling flow of tourists to Darjeeling which has witnessed a lot of violence recently.
However, officials say the campaign to attract tourists to Kaziranga needs to be done immediately as the park would be closed with the onset of monsoon. The government also plans to approach Central government offices to attract their employees.
