Dacoit gunned down in Madhya Pradesh
Monday, May 19, 2008 21:05 [IST]

Bhopal: A dreaded dacoit Babu Singh, carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 for his capture, was gunned down in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, the police said Monday.

Following a tip off, the police laid a trap and cornered about half a dozen dacoits in the jungles of Bhind district, Chambal Range Inspector General of Police Arvind Kumar said.

The dacoits started firing when asked to surrender by the police team.

"The police fired back, killing Babu Singh during the gun battle. The other dacoits, however, managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness," Kumar told IANS over the phone.

Babu Singh, uncle of slain dacoit Jagjivan Singh Parihar, was wanted in more than a dozen cases of loot and dacoity. He operated in the border districts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Parihar was shot dead a year ago.
